Anna Howard Shaw
In 1912, the Arizona Equal Suffrage Association hosted prominent suffragist Anna Howard Shaw to speak about the cause at the Flagstaff Courthouse. Shaw was a doctor, minister, and president of the National Woman’s Suffrage League. A gifted speaker, she died shortly before women were given the right to vote in the United States but is remembered for her fearless efforts to advance the rights of women.

Salt Potatoes
The Syracuse area has a long history of salt production. Yielded from natural springs, the salt was processed in large open vats and the salt residue was scraped up and packaged. Irish workers created the dish of salt potatoes by boiling potatoes they had brought in for lunch in the salt vats. This caught on and spread to local restaurants. Today, salt potatoes are served in melted butter with herbs.

Betsy’s Ride
In 1775, 16-year-old girl Betsy Dowdy heard that British soldiers near her town were advancing towards Camden, Virginia from North Carolina. Betsy set off along the Caratoke highway to relay the news to the leader of the American Militia, General Skinner. hanks to Betsy's bravery and determination, the Continental Army was able to prepare for the British attack and eventually win the battle of Camden.
