A Zulu community in rural South Africa had no school and enlisted Nomusa Zikhali to create one, with only four trees to shelter the children as they begin their studies. Viewers are taken on her journey as she builds the school, while developing into an empowered and motivating woman. As she gathered supporters, the school moved under four trees - one tree for each of the three grades with the fourth as her office. We watch her succeed over difficult conditions: including high illiteracy and unemployment, HIV/AIDS, the legacy of apartheid, a struggle for every drop of water, breaking out from the traditional role of a woman within the patriarchal Zulu culture. UNDER FOUR TREES is also the story of Thuli and Siyabonga who share their dreams and how Mrs. Zikhali and the Nkomo Primary School influenced their lives. Mrs. Zikhali has successfully built an educational complex for 960 children that created a powerful and sustainable change in her Zulu community. This story shows the transformative power of education.
