BEYOND BORDERS is a one-hour television special exploring the social, cultural and personal impacts of four decades of unprecedented immigration from Mexico to the United States -- from a uniquely Mexican perspective.

Today, there are more than 32 million Mexican-Americans living in the United States. Most of them (or their parents) arrived in the US over the last 40 years as part of what the Pew Hispanic Center has identified as “the largest wave of immigration in history from a single country to the United States.”

The impact of this period of mass migration is being felt in both the United States and in Mexico. Many of these immigrants have lived in the US for a decade or more, raising families and giving rise to a process of deep cultural exchange that is profoundly affecting the culture of people and communities in both nations.

These recent immigrants and their children are challenging and reshaping the social, political and cultural landscape of the United States – and contributing to a vibrant and increasingly diverse vision of American life.

The BEYOND BORDERS documentary – and this web site – will tell stories that reveal the goals, desires and lives of recent Mexican immigrants.

Our aim with the BEYOND BORDERS project is to offer a wide range of personal stories that help to deepen public understanding of the experiences of recent Mexican immigrants, the ongoing process of cultural assimilation, minority rights, and the increasingly multi-cultural character of American society.

BEYOND BORDERS is a co-production of the Independent Production Fund, a television production company based in New York City, and Editorial Clio, a literary and television production entity based in Mexico City.
