A Towering Task | Educational Resources
Lesson Summary
A Towering Task: The Story of the Peace Corps is an engaging and informative look at the history of the Peace Corps, an icon of American idealism. The film guides viewers through the Peace Corps founding during the Cold War in 1961 to the challenges and changes it faces today.
These educational resources adapted from the documentary consist of three lessons and an activity, which can be used either individually, or as a four-part unit. Students will view segments from the film and answer comprehension questions based on those segments. Each segment is intended to guide students through the essential questions posed by the film and help them not only gain a better understanding of the Peace Corps itself, but also open a class discussion of larger themes including nationalism/isolationism, neo-colonialism and global citizenship.
Students will build upon their learning by conducting additional research of ongoing Peace Corps efforts, and presenting their findings in either a newscast-style video, or audio podcast.
