Approximately 1.4.billion of the world’s population live on less than $1 a day, the majority of whom live in rural areas trying to make a living from agriculture. For these people, land is the most important asset they can own. Land is their source of shelter, food, income and security. Unfortunately, most of these people do not have secure rights to the land they till, a problem that perpetuates their ongoing poverty and ability to survive. LAND OF OUR OWN, a timely documentary from award winning producer Bob Gliner (Schools That Change Communities, One Carbon Footprint At A Time, Walk the Walk) examines the impact a Seattle based organization, RDI/Landesa is having on this problem. While RDI/Landesa’s small group of attorneys attempt to influence land policies in some 40 countries around the world, this program takes a look at three countries where they are most involved: India, Rwanda, and China – examining the challenges they face, the societal and cultural problems they must try to overcome, and ultimately, their impact on the endemic problem of world poverty. While seemingly far removed from the American experience, LAND OF OUR OWN raises the fundamental question whether there can be any lasting economic or political security so long as problems of world poverty remain.
